Mmmm! Le Croissant

On Friday over the noon hour, the Grade 7 and 8 students had a lovely stroll in the warm sunshine and crunchy leaves to nearby Saint-Boniface.  Our destination was none other than Le Croissant, owned and operated by Jerome and Fabienne Boulanger, who came to Winnipeg from Alsace, France in 2005 and have been delighting our city with the finest croissants, French breads, pastries and desserts ever since. Coincidentally, their last name means "baker" in French.

Le Croissant, 276 Taché Avenue

What a mouth-watering display of fine baked goods!

Each student made their request en français, which gave us practice for the newly-acquired expression, "Je voudrais...s'il vous plaît."  Mme Boulanger also very generously treated the students to some caramel and chocolate macaroons!  Students presented her with a thank-you card containing some haiku poetry (en français, bien sûr!), written about Le Croissant and its amazing foods.

Afterward, we enjoyed a quick lunch in Coronation Park nearby.

We had a quick promenade à pied back to school, in time for our next class of the afternoon!  It was a memorable time and we felt truly blessed.

In all grades, we will be continuing our work on the Questions of the Week from last week. We will be looking forward to starting some new student modules that will further our learning in our "Moi/Identification personelle" unit.

French Friday

Each Friday morning, we have "O Canada" en français, along with the Lord's Prayer and the weather announcement:

This year, all students in Gr. 7 and 8 will have their turn to recite the Lord's Prayer. There are also students in Grades 5-6 who are working hard as well to prepare for this.  Great work, everyone!

À bientôt!

Signs of love

Learning a second language gives us strategies that help us learn other languages.  This past week our Grade Three and Four class learned the sign for "love" in American Sign Language along with the expression, "J'aime..."

We put our hands together and created a bulletin board display in the hallway.

The "Question of the Week" for Gr. 3-5 will be "Est-ce que tu aimes...?"  We will also be practicing "Quel âge as-tu?" in our unit on "Moi/Identification Personnelle".  Grades 6-8 will be expanding upon the question "Quelle est ta matière préférée?", applying the question to foods, drinks, pastimes and sports.  The new vocabulary that we learn as we answer these questions will be added to our "Dictionnaire Personnelle".  It's going to be a busy week of learning!

Hands On!

We've been working on reviewing our communication phrases from last year with a very hands-on approach!

Stay tuned to see what these hands will do!

Our "Question of the Week" is "Quelle est ta matière préférée?"

Try this at home!

We reviewed many of last year's expressions using games that the students enjoyed.  The "Name Change Game" helped us to review:

  • "Comment t'appelles tu?"  (What is your name?")
  • Je m'appelle _________./?   (My name is______./?)

We quickly brainstormed a list of boys' and girls' names.  A student was brought to the front. He/She closed eyes and another student pointed to a new name on the whiteboard for him/her.  We all asked, "Comment t'appelles-tu?" and the student had three guesses, using the full sentence, "Je m'appelle ______?  You can try this at home!

The Gr. 7/8 students reviewed a variety of expressions in a Jeopardy Game.

Other classes enjoyed playing "7-debout" or "Heads-up, Seven-up" with expressions that encourage communication.

The expressions used in this round of the game were:

  • "Comment t'appelles-tu?" ("What is your name?") and its response, "Je m'appelle ________."
  • "Quel est ton nom?" (another version of "What is your name?") and its response, "Mon nom est _____________."
  • "Comment ça va?" ("How are you?/How's it going?") and its response, "Ça va bien/mal/comme-ci, comme-ça/très bien.", etc.)
  • "Quel âge as-tu?" ("How old are you?") and its response, "J'ai _____ ans."
  • "Quelle est la date de ton anniversaire?" ("What is your birthday?") and its response, "Mon anniversaire, c'est le (number) (month)."
  • "Où habites-tu?" ("Where do you live?") and its response, "J'habite à _____."
There were also other expressions we had fun reviewing.  We also went over "Notre Père" (The Lord's Prayer) as we will be needing volunteers to recite the Lord's Prayer in French for Friday morning announcements for "French Friday".  Students who would like to practice can follow the link here.  It's also added to "French Videos" on the right of this page.

Notre Père (The Lord's Prayer)

I've also added a link to "O Canada" (under French Videos).

Our new expression for this week, for Grades 4-8 is "Quel est ton nom?".

Bonne fin de semaine! À bientôt!

Bienvenue! C'est la rentrée!

Welcome back! Nous sommes de retour!

I hope you all had a refreshing summer vacation.  We have had an exciting first day back to classes.  We've been reviewing all our "Questions of the Week" and other expressions learned last year, incorporating them into some games.  I hope to have a couple pictures posted by the end of this week.

À bientôt,
